Alexander stared his career as a member of the Germany's Federal Border Police (Bundesgrenzschutz), before taking up government secondments in United Nations and OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) peace and security missions. Having spent many years running security operations for a range of global organisations in high risk environments (FYRo Macedonia, Georgia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uganda, DR Congo, Somalia, Nigeria).

Dr Hasenstab is currently based in Kenya, where he is the Regional Security Coordinator for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian organisation. As the organisation’s lead security risk management advisor in the region, he is responsible for supporting forty-nine National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Africa in relation to security management.
